Wilmington Harbor Enhancement Trust
New Floating Docks Downtown
In 1993, when WHET was organized, there was one private 40'
floating dock on the downtown riverfront. Boaters wishing to dock
had only one option - tie up to the pilings at the Hilton Riverwalk.
Smaller boats needed to bring a ladder to disembark at low tide.
Since it's founding, WHET has encouraged the city and county to
construct and improve the public docking infrastructure through
the use of grants and general fund appropriations.
Wilmington now has over 1,300 feet of public
floating docks with power and water and a
dockmaster to manage their use.
There are also over 800 feet of private
floating docks in the downtown area and
several full service large marina facilities
nearby.
Things are quite different from 1993!
